A little bit of history about the building:
The building was originally not a residential property, but a large grain storage and transshipment facility. It was constructed between 1896 and 1898. Grain silos were located on both sides of the central section. Seagoing vessels could unload grain on the IJ waterfront, after which the grain was transported into the building by elevators and conveyor belts for storage. It could then be transferred onto smaller vessels or railway wagons. The building is now listed as a national monument.
Between 1997 and 2000, the former silo building was converted into residential apartments, studios and commercial spaces. In 2001, the Stenen Silo officially came into use as a residential and working building.So, essentially, it offers a modern apartment within a beautifully restored historic industrial building.
Because the original silo had almost no windows, openings had to be created in the building’s thick exterior walls during the conversion. The photographs on the website still clearly show how the original architectural rhythm and industrial character of the building were carefully preserved during the transformation.
