Sittard
Sittard (Limburgish: Zitterd) is a city in Dutch Limburg, in the transition area between Central Limburg and the South Limburg hill country. It is one of the oldest places in the Netherlands and the second oldest city (with city rights) of Limburg.
Since 2001, Sittard together with the south-western adjacent Geleen, located in the former Western Mining District, and several smaller places, including Born, forms the municipality of Sittard-Geleen. Due to this merger, the municipality of Sittard-Geleen, with approximately 92,661 inhabitants, has become the third largest in the province.
The original hinterland of Sittard forms the historic Land of Zwentibold around the Graetheide.
Sittard lies exactly wedged between two national borders in the narrowest part of the province of Limburg, also the narrowest part of the Netherlands. To the east and northeast, it borders Germany, near the municipality of Selfkant, and to the west the Meuse, which forms the border with Belgium.
