Sittard
Sittard (Limburg: Zitterd) is a city in Dutch Limburg, in the transition area between Central Limburg and the South Limburg hills. It is one of the oldest places in the Netherlands and the second oldest city (with city rights) in Limburg.
Since 2001, Sittard forms together with its south-western neighbour Geleen, located in the former Westelijke Mijnstreek, and a number of smaller towns, including Born, the municipality of Sittard-Geleen. As a result of this merger, the municipality of Sittard-Geleen has become the third largest in the province in terms of population (approximately 92,661).
The original hinterland of Sittard forms the historic Land of Zwentibold around the Graetheide.
Sittard lies exactly wedged between two national borders in the narrowest part of the province of Limburg, also the narrowest part of the Netherlands. In the east and northeast it borders Germany, near the municipality of Selfkant, and in the west it borders the Maas, which forms the border with Belgium.
