Sittard
Sittard (Limburgs: Zitterd) is a city in Dutch Limburg, in the transition area between Central Limburg and the South Limburg hills. It is one of the oldest places in the Netherlands and the second oldest city (with city rights) of Limburg.
Since 2001, Sittard has formed the municipality of Sittard-Geleen, together with the south-western neighboring town of Geleen in the former Western Mining Area and a number of smaller towns, including Born. As a result of this merger, the municipality of Sittard-Geleen has become the third largest town in the province in terms of population (approx. 92,661).
The original hinterland of Sittard forms the historic Land of Zwentibold around the Graetheide.
Sittard lies exactly wedged between two national borders in the narrowest part of the province of Limburg, also the narrowest part of the Netherlands. To the east and northeast it borders Germany, near the municipality of Selfkant, and to the west the Meuse, which forms the border with Belgium.
