Brunssum
There are indications that the area around Brunssum was already inhabited in prehistoric times. This also applies to the neighboring municipalities Heerlen and Landgraaf. Little is known about this habitation. Archaeological finds and medieval mentions point to uninterrupted habitation of this area for the past 2,000 years.
In the Middle Ages, a defensive wall was built in Schutterspark for protection.
The parish of Brunssum has been known since 1150 and formed a magistrate’s court together with Schinveld and Jabeek within the Land of Valkenburg. In 1557, the magistrate’s court of Brunssum, consisting of Brunssum, Schinveld, and Jabeek, was elevated by the government of the Spanish Netherlands to a lordship and pawned to the family Hoen van Amstenrade, and in 1609 sold to Arnold III Huyn of Geleen. In 1664 this lordship Brunssum was incorporated into the county of Geleen and Amstenrade. At the end of the ancien régime in 1794, Brunssum became an independent municipality.
By 1150 there was already a Saint Gregory Church in the center, which in 1579 was elevated to a parish church. The current church is modern.
Neither the magistrate’s court nor the parish have known seals or seal images. The coat of arms is therefore composed of the coat of arms of the Huyn family and the parish saint.
