The Scheepvaartkwartier district / Nieuw Werk
The Scheepvaartkwartier or Nieuwe Werk is a neighborhood in Rotterdam located on the banks of the Nieuwe Maas.
The district is bounded in the north by the Westzeedijk, in the east by Zalmhaven and Zalmstraat, in the south by
Willemskade, Westerkade, and Parkkade, and in the west by Parkhaven. The Veerhaven and the nearby Parklaan, with its
monumental construction from around 1900 form the center of the Scheepvaartkwartier. The Caland Monument, which
commemorates engineer Pieter Caland, is located on the Veerkade. The white monumental buildings on the Westerkade
(actually Javastraat and Zeemansstraat), built in almost colonial style, dating from about 1865, are among the most
beautiful in the district.
The Scheepvaartkwartier is a protected cityscape and therefore a national monument. With 98 of the more than
500 national monuments in Rotterdam, the Scheepvaartkwartier is a treasure trove of cultural heritage. The
Scheepvaartkwartier is part of the urban area of Rotterdam located outside the dikes.
At the end of the 20th century, a new construction took place, and a few exclusive restaurants were established in the
district. On the east side, the Zalmhaven was filled in in 1991 for the construction of the Erasmus Bridge. In an attempt to
attract wealthy residents back to the center of Rotterdam, luxury apartments were built on Willemsplein and Willemskade
near the driveway to the Erasmus Bridge. The Scheepvaartkwartier is now one of the top 20 richest neighborhoods in the
Netherlands. Restaurants such as Parkheuvel (with two Michelin stars), Zeezout, and La Stanza are among the top in the
Netherlands. The Scheepvaartkwartier also has a large number of law firms.
The seat of the Diocese of Rotterdam is located on Koningin Emmaplein. There are two museums in the
Scheepvaartkwartier: the Wereldmuseum (Willemskade) and the Tax & Customs Museum (Parklaan). The Spido and
Waterbus moorings are located on Willemskade. The restored warehouse complex Westelijk Handelsterrein is also worth
seeing.
