Spring in The Netherlands

One of the most beloved seasons in the Netherlands is spring. Whether you’ve been living here for a while or have just arrived, this season is definitely a highlight. In this article, you'll learn more about what makes spring special in the Netherlands, so you can enjoy it to the fullest and be well prepared!

Spring weather

Dutch spring weather can be unpredictable. You might experience sunshine, rain, and wind all in one day. In May, the average daytime temperature is around 13.5°C, but it can vary. Just last week, temperatures reached 25°C with full sun, which is a reminder that Dutch spring can surprise you with sudden bursts of summer-like weather. While showers can still pop up unexpectedly, sunny days become more frequent. Dressing in layers is key, and it's wise to carry a light raincoat or umbrella, just in case.

Tulip season

As the weather improves and the days get brighter, it's the perfect time to explore one of the Netherlands’ most iconic spring sights: the tulip fields. The Netherlands is known not only for its cheese and windmills, but also for its tulips. Between March and May, the tulip fields are in full bloom. One of the most famous locations to see this floral spectacle is Keukenhof, where millions of flowers bloom in a wide variety of colors. A great way to experience the season is by renting a bike and touring the fields around Lisse.

Health & Well-being

With longer days and more sunshine, it’s the perfect time to get active. Go for a walk, a run, a bike ride, or join an outdoor boot camp in a local park. And remember: cycling isn’t just healthy, it’s the most Dutch way to get around. For a healthy boost, be sure to visit local markets, which often offer fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables.

What else can you do in Spring?

As soon as the sun comes out, the Dutch head outside. Parks fill with picnic blankets, terraces overflow with people enjoying a drink, and beaches become popular destinations. Spring is a great time to enjoy Dutch culture and nature. Here are a few popular activities:

  • Have a picnic in the park
  • Take a boat ride through the canals
  • Enjoy a beer on a sunny terrace
  • Visit a food or music festival
  • Walk along the Dutch coastline
  • Visit national parks such as De Veluwe

Public Holidays

Spring in the Netherlands is filled with public holidays, often resulting in long weekends. This is a perfect excuse to get out and explore. Here’s a quick overview of the public holidays:

  • Easter (March/April): This Christian holiday is filled with cozy brunches, Easter egg hunts, and lots of chocolate. Both Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are national holidays.
  • King’s Day (April 27): The King's birthday is celebrated with a nationwide party. Everyone wears orange, and the streets are full of flea markets, live music, and festivities.
  • Liberation Day (May 5): This day marks the celebration of freedom, featuring large festivals and official commemorations throughout the country. In most sectors, it's an official day off only once every five years, although some employers choose to give employees a day off each year.
  • Ascension Day and Pentecost (May/June): These Christian holidays often create long weekends. Many locals use the opportunity to travel or enjoy the outdoors.

Holiday Allowance

A nice bonus for employees in the Netherlands is holiday allowance (“vakantiegeld”), typically paid in May. It amounts to around 8% of your gross annual salary, intended to help fund your holidays. Some employers distribute this amount throughout the year, rather than as a lump sum. A welcome extra in spring!
