Notably, the later Nobel Prize winner H.A. Lorentz and artist M.C. Escher attended this school. For M.C. Escher, the central staircase was even the source of inspiration for his most famous artwork.

The building is located on Schoolstraat in the Rijks-protected cityscape of Spijkerkwartier. This neighborhood is characterized by the presence of many monumental buildings, including the “Brussels houses” located in the adjacent Spijkerstraat. The neighborhood borders the center of Arnhem.
