History of the Vismarkt: The Vismarkt represents Utrecht’s oldest market area, situated along the historic Oudegracht canal, constructed around the year 1000. In medieval times, this canal likely served as the moat for Trecht Castle, directly facing the commercial trading district of Stathe across the Maartensbrug. Around 1050, both the imperial Palace of Lofen and the episcopal palace stood nearby. From approximately 1200 onward, fish and salt trading flourished at this location,where catch was preserved fresh inside submerged baskets along the canal wall. Bridges built in the 13th and 14th centuries eventually merged to create wider public squares suitable for expansive trade. Today, while fish trade concluded in 1970, the Vismarkt retains its distinctive heritage, hosting welcoming terraces and cafés in a vibrant historic setting.
