History of Huis Zoudenbalch:
In the centre of Utrecht, on Donkerstraat stands a unique monumental which has surely caught your attention before. The beautiful city castle on Donkerstraat was built in 1467, commissioned by Evert Zoudenbalch. Afterwards, it had various uses, as a chaplaincy building and secretariat of the Catholic church, crafts school and warehouse with showrooms of tradesmen, with the last, until 2008, occupant being the Nature and Environment Foundation. In 1903, the building was destroyed by fire. The characteristic neo-Gothic facade of Namur stone, battlements, cross windows, stained glass windows with the red shutters, everything was restored in original style during the renovation. In 2011, Huis Zoudenbalch was completely renovated and converted into a complex with 24 unique flats. The flats are all different and fully insulated. There is a communal courtyard garden and a central bicycle shed.
