History of the location The Vismarkt is the oldest market in Utrecht and directly borders the Oudegracht, which was constructed around the year 1000 as a moat for the Trecht fortress. Around 1050, the Imperial Palace Lofen and the Episcopal Palace were built here, and from 1200 onwards, the area became the hub for the local fish and salt trade.Between 1250 and 1325, several bridges were merged to create the wide square seen today. Nowadays, the Vismarkt is known for its lively terraces and rich historic atmosphere.
