HISTORY
The street names in Zaans Hout, such as Mahoniehout, Teakhout, and Vurehout, refer to the timber trade, the engine of the Zaan region for centuries. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, hundreds of windmills, including many sawmills, operated here. This turned the Zaan into one of Europe's first industrial areas and a center for shipbuilding. Tsar Peter the Great even came to Zaandam in 1697 to learn the trade of a ship carpenter. His cottage still stands on the Krimp.
