Description

Experience living in a unique and incredibly special residence on the wharf along the Oudegracht canal in the lively historic heart of Utrecht. Inside you will find a delightful quiet home, while the bustling city life stays waiting for you outside.

Have you always wanted to see the boats go through the canal right outside your centuries-old yet modern home in the heart of Utrecht? Then this is your chance! You can experience this daily from November 1, 2023.
This unique monumental house is part of the old former brewery “De Boog” located directly next to the water of the Oudegracht canal in the heart of the city. Part of the house is built at the wharf and continues underneath the street into the wharf cellar behind. In 2010 the house was completely modernized and transformed under architecture into a luxurious loft: a large open space with a high level of finish.

Location: This beautiful home is located in the center of Utrecht, right next to the water of the Oudegracht between the Vollersbrug (bridge) and Ledig Erf (bridge square). One of the most beautiful places in Utrecht. A quiet and picturesque location in the middle of the Utrecht Museum Quarter. It is near Ledig Erf with its bars and terraces, and within walking distance of the shopping area and Central Station. From early spring you can sit outside and enjoy the sun and all the cheerful boats passing by. And with a bit of luck you can even skate on the ice of the adjacent canal ‘de Singel’ during a cold winter. With the Twijnstraat on the other side of the Oudegracht, all shops are within reach. And at any time you can start a walk from your home over the wharf, through “de Zeven Steegjes” (cozy old working-class neighborhood), over the old city wall, along the green canals, towards the Lepelenburg park or the “Oude Hortus” (old botanical garden), through the Lange Nieuwstraat, straight to the Dom bell tower. Or just go for a short walk to Ledig Erf for a drink and a snack.

Layout: From the street, the iron gate of “De Boog” opens to a staircase to reach the canal and the wharf houses. Along the water you walk towards the second part of the old brewery building, to the second of three semicircular front doors that gives access to the beautiful living space.
The part of the house that is built on the wharf has both windows viewing the waterfront and a large skylight which ensures a lot of light. This part is used as a dining room and home office. The ceiling here rises to 4.5 meters high and there is a four-meter-high wall rack with many plants which gives this area a nice green vibe. There are also two canoes hanging down from the ceiling that the tenant can use during his stay. Next to the transition to the next area is the toilet with a small storage room above it.
From the dining room you step into the wharf cellar area starting with the kitchen. The modern kitchen is fully equipped with, among other things, a combi microwave / oven, dishwasher and large retro-look fridge with freezer. The 4-burner gas stove with built-in extraction and various cupboards with storage options make the kitchen complete. There is a special object in a corner of the kitchen: a large 2000 kg and 100 year old steel safe. Firearms and ammunition were once stored here, when the wharf cellar was set up as a shooting range. Today, this historic safe serves as a pantry for crockery and food. Opposite the kitchen, parallel to the counter, is a white bar with four bar stools, where guests can keep the cook company while enjoying drinks and snacks.
Above the entrance to the kitchen is the round window of the daylight tube (solatube) that subtly reflects daylight along the length of the loft to the back of the wharf cellar.

If you continue further into the loft, you will find the lounge area with the monumental brick arched ceiling. This area is dominated by a huge gold-velvet lounge sofa. A roaring twenties style bar, a soft pink armchair, decorative fireplace (clean-burning bio ethanol), large round rugs with baroque flowers and a home cinema / beamer complete the picture. Cocooning in winter time, and autumn, and spring, and summer, and really just every night for that matter, has never been so nice.

A white cupboard wall forms the partition between the living and sleeping areas of the loft. In the bedroom there is a large double bed with a second large cupboard wall opposite the bed with not only more storage space for, for example, your clothes, but in which also the dryer and washing machine are concealed.
The bedroom forms a whole with the open, very spacious bathroom. The bathroom area has a double sink with storage drawers underneath, a wide and freestanding (Vola) walk-in shower and an impressive large round (Hoesch) bath.

Healthy air in the home: Robust air vents have been incorporated into the square surround of the large round bath. From these vents, fresh filtered air flows continuously from above via an air filter device; very gently from the bathroom at the back of the wharf cellar towards the kitchen in the front of the house. This guarantees a healthy living environment throughout the entire home.

Outdoor space: from the front door you step right onto the wharf, with a wooden folding table next to the door and two chairs so that you can enjoy your breakfast directly next to the water of the Oudegracht in the morning or have a drink after work. There are two wooden folding chairs for visitors in the hidden section of the white wardrobe on the right in the corner of the dining room.
